Returning To Work Soon After Giving Birth

July 18, 2012 was the craziest but best day of my life. It's the day my husband and I met out baby girl, Mila. She was 8lbs, 3oz, 21 inches of deliciousness. I couldn't believe what we had created and how beautiful she is. It almost felt unreal that she was ours.

The day we took her home, I walked in the house and had this feeling of, "OK, what do I do now?" That feeling quickly left me and I jumped right into a routine with her. I have to say that being a mother turned out to be a little harder that I thought. I never realized how much of my life would change. Just the little things like running to the store, getting my nails done aren't as easy to do, and to get out of the house feels like an eternity. But I wouldn't change a thing.

I always thought I would be one of those mothers that would never want to leave their child to go back to work, boy was I mistaken. As much as I love my daughter and love being with her, I started feeling like I was losing myself and my mind. I waited until the baby was four weeks old and I realized that I needed to go back to work...for my sanity. I started working three days a week. Thank god for my amazing family that have taken turns each day to take Mila, which made me feel so at ease to leave her.

I felt like a terrible mother for wanting to go back to work so soon. Before long I realized that going back to work was the best thing I could have done. I started feeling like a person again, just getting up and getting ready, leaving the house and having normal conversations with adults was amazing. If anything I felt like it made me a better mother. Being away from her made me miss her and want to be with her that much more.

It's amazing how much love Mila brought to our family, and how much closer it brought all of us. Having a baby changes your life but definitely for the better. I couldn't imagine my life without her.

Hair Myths And How To Achieve Beautiful Hair

I'm sure at some point in every person's hair history someone has given out bad hair advice or has heard a myth or two pertaining to your lovely locks. For example, how the more often you get haircuts, the faster your hair will grow. One of my personal favorites is when people use the term "my hair feels dead". If your hair feels dead, that's because it is. Another big one is how keratin is harmful to the client receiving the service, when in fact it's the stylist performing the treatment who should be wearing a mask. The list could go on and on. However, the biggest myth of them is is that "beauty school is easy". Trust me, anyone who has been to or graduated from Cosmetology school will sincerely beg to differ.

If there is one thing I've learned since I began Cosmo school four months ago it's that school is far from easy. When you attend school you're not only learning about hair cutting and color, but you're also studying nails, skin care, make-up, scalp treatments, business, anatomy, biology, chemistry, electricity and that's just to name a few! The truth is, licensed beauticians are more or less like hair doctors. We are trained to the tee to be able to assess a client's hair, have them express their concerns, and find a solution to accommodate their wants and needs while keeping their hair and scalp as healthy as possible. It's our job and responsibility to provide you with the best knowledge in hair care.....not your neighbors. I mean you wouldn't see a podiatrist for a toothache.

Having a hair check-up is pertinent in the health of your hair and scalp, so why would you want to skip a doctor's appointment? The point is everyone cares about their hair, so naturally you want the best for it. Count on the licensed professionals to point you in the right direction. See your stylist at least once every two weeks to discuss how your hair is changing and what you can to keep up with it as best you can.

Think of the salon as your emergency hair hotline and help us, help you, help your hair.

Happy Friday everyone!! Hope you're enjoying the last day of sunmer. (Sigh.) I love the Fall, but I love the Summer even more and I'm not ready for the season change.

But with Fall comes lots of changes. From pumpkins to football to Halloween fun. Here at the salon we have a little change ourselves, we will now be open on SUNDAYS. Let me tell you more about that with the "Five Fun Things of the Week".

5. AS THE WEATHER GETS COLDER, WATCH THE WATER TEMPERATURE IN THE SHOWER.

Just because it's getting colder doesn't mean to crank the heat to the max. Not only does it dry out your skin, it has the same effect to your scalp. Hot water strips the natural oils from your scalp. Go for lukewarm for healthy locks.

Hair Box Dye Gone Bad

All artists start with a black canvas. As a colorist, my canvas is never blank. This poses a challenge, which is expected and welcomed.

One of my most difficult tests is when someone tries to save money and time by using a box color at home. Can you ever imagine?

I had someone about a week ago who wanted to try something different. Other than the brunette color she was having done at the salon, she wanted red. She went to a local pharmacy, bought a red-brown box color, and applied to her hair everywhere. The problem, the color on the ends did not change despite the red color on her roots. Now her half hour appointment has become a five and a half hour color correction. $250 later, she was walking out with an intense, luxurious, rich red color.

Quick Fact: There is no need to follow the directions on the box color to get the results we all see in advertisements or on the box itself.

This is your classic case of "box dye gone bad". Save your time, money and piece of mind. See a licensed professional for the results you love to expect.

Head Rush Summer Recap

Hey guys! I'm so stoked about what's to come for Head Rush this Fall! But first let's recap our amazing summer!

We started our summer with a big bang opening the East Hills location.

We raised over $12,000 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation. 

We participated in 30 at FOUR again this summer. 

Most importantly, I learned so many new techniques and styles at the Redken Exchange Academy in August. The class was taught by the best in the industry: Jayson Morgan, Hugo Urias and Adina Doss. Oh and let me not forget SAM VILLA who is an amazing educator with more than 30 years experience in the industry. So expect lots of funky styles, braids and high buns So let's have fun this Fall and try some new things.

A Note From Erica and Christine....

As summer comes to an end, we would like to take the time to thank our clients, old and new.

Although at times it can be crazy, having a passion as strong as we do for our career turns the crazy into good. Thanks to our dedicated and growing staff (that we consider family), we have been able to make this move into our new home a wonderful experience for us and for all of you! We couldn't be happier! This summer has been amazing and we know it is only the beginning of what's to come.

So get ready to "Fall" into your new look this upcoming season with lots of special events and promotions, including new product launches and blowout memberships!

We are continually trying to make this experience the best that it can possibly be. Keep the feedback coming, we love it! We always look forward to hearing from you!
